Because of You/Por Es Ustedes

Artist Statement:

When invited to partake in this year’s Kentucky tradition, the goal was to use this platform to spotlight those who make the Derby possible, Trackside staff. @blcatchurchilldowns Director Sherry Stanley and Communications and Marketing Manager @peytonhobson teamed up with the INCREDIBLE team at BLC to turn the impossible into reality! With 130 people, 150 hands, and incredible stories, we crafted something remarkable. Artist statement below:

“‘It’s Because of You’ ‘Es Por Ustedes’” pays homage to the people whose handprints create this colorful pattern on the horse. Each handprint was applied by a racetrack worker, and symbolizes their dedication and compassion, as well as their intimate connection with the magnificent animals they tend to. By identifying the people and their job titles through signature and photograph, this piece illuminates just how many hands work together in the racing community, and in this cultural landmark of Louisville.
