This statue honors Alonzo “Lonnie” Clayton, who rode Ara to win the Kentucky Derby in 1892.

This is one of the 11 Gallopalooza statues sponsored by Louisville Tourism, commemorating African American horsemen’s key role in building the foundation of horse racing.

Artist Statement:

A multicolored design that highlights one of the greatest American jockeys in Thoroughbred horse racing, Alonzo Clayton. The vibrant color palette reflects Alonzo’s legacy and the diversity within horse racing.
